Non-partisan Endorsements rolling in….

This was a big week for getting our politicians to take a stand on the Ward System. While the current administration is against the Ward System (CSL stated publically on the radio on Friday 9/19 morning that he was against it without explaining why), other local politicians have come out in favor of it and the results are resoundingly non-partisan. It makes sense for all politicians -other than those in power – to want a level playing field for their supporters and they are coming out and saying so. “Democracy functions best when it is representational. A ward system would allow Town officials to be more responsive to local issues. It would provide more opportunity for residents to have a place at the table and their voices heard. I encourage Ramapo residents to vote ‘Yes’ on both ballot questions at their regular polling places on September 30th.” Assemblywoman Ellen Jaffee (D-Suffern) “Ramapo is one of the largest towns in the State and a ward system would benefit all the residents by encouraging more participation and debate among the Town’s diverse population. I urge residents to vote ‘Yes’ on the two ballot questions on September 30th. Assemblyman Kenneth Zebrowski (D-New City) “Whatever your political beliefs or leanings are, it appears to us that the ward system is the fairest system because council persons would be elected for a specific geographical area, thereby making the council persons more accountable for their area’s wants and needs.” The Ramapo Republican Committee “A ward system of government for Ramapo would provide all areas of Ramapo with at least some government representation in our Town. While it...

Why is this Special Election so badly organized?

Why is this Special Election so badly organized?

I have been trying to amass information to post to this website and some of the information is pretty hard to track down. Why? Because the answers simply don’t exist yet. The Town of Ramapo spent so much time avoiding this Special Election rather than planning it that when the Judge’s decision came down with the time frame spelled out as it was, it became impossible to schedule the ballots to appear on the Primary Election next week on September 9th, (too early) and General Election on November 4th (too late). So the Town of Ramapo picked September 30th leaving no one any time to plan much of anything and they  get the benefit of having the Rockland County Board of Election overseeing the election and quite frankly they are still figuring out what to do. The good news appears to be that they will make provisions for Absentee ballots, at least that’s what they are promising the public at large. The bad news is that they just don’t know what they are doing yet and the election is now only 4 weeks away. The laws that governs this election are all spelled out in the articles of NY State Town law Article 6: Section 81 spells out the basics of Elections on Proposition. (This why of the election). Section 82 governs notices and hours of voting (so far it all seems okay). Section 83 – Conduct of Election (Without the oversight of the RC BOE there is concern about this.) Section 84 – Who gets to vote (This where all the registration issues need to be addressed.) Section 84a...
